Ancient Roman Glass Pendant

Skilled Roman glassmakers produced bottles, bowls and other vessels for storing various liquids across the Mediterranean world. When the Roman Empire fell, these objects were lost or buried, remaining underground for potentially 2,000 years. During that time, silica in the glass underwent devitrification, a slow chemical process where moisture or alkaline leaches into the glass surface, crystallizing into a thin iridescent patina.
